Summer movie preview

Is it any surprise that the institution that edits history in its own vision, commits crimes against physics and logic, and is completely void of originality, would start the summer movie in May?  The answer: nope!  Hollywood gets more money and audiences have something to look forward to for summer.  Yet, as Hollywood has learned, there are risks.  Studios can risk a major flop, but too many releases will leave audiences having to choose carefully, which is bad for the major studios competing all at once.  With Hollywood’s image declining in recent years, summer has become a game for the studios and filmmakers to give the best product to satisfy filmgoers. 

 

Where 2012 was a monumental success in the summer, 2013 was not as impressive to many. That means 2014 could be a crucial year for Hollywood, as going to the cinema is becoming less of a major entertainment source, due to the rise of TV and internet.  For 2014, the usual summer releases from Hollywood: sequels, action flicks, and family entertainment.  From May to August, Hollywood will either rake in billions or fail (in their minds).  So, with this, Hollywood is giving these major releases in summer 2014 to the public.

 

MAY:

2- Amazing Spider Man 2

9- Neighbors

16- Godzilla & Million Dollar Arm

23- X-Men: Days of Futures Past

30- A Million Ways to Die in the West & Maleficent

 

 

JUNE:

6- Edge of Tomorrow & The Fault in Our Stars 

13- 22 Jump Street & How to Train Your Dragon 2

20- Jersey Boys

27- Transformers: Age of Extinction

 

 

JULY:

11- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

18- Jupiter Ascending & The Purge: Anarchy

25- Hercules

 

 

AUGUST:

1- Guardians of the Galaxy

8- Lucy & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

15- Expendables 3

22- Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame for a Kill

 

 

Granted, there will be smaller releases and other major releases that could surprise, but this is basically what Hollywood is counting on to rake in the money that keeps them going.  Summer is when Hollywood returns to its roots of escapism. The films here aren’t likely to win any awards, but give some entertainment.  Yet, there will be that one film that defines the summer and will be remembered the most. It’s now the audiences job to find it.   

Romantic movies in America

            Romantic movies have been around since the invention of movies, and romance has always been an audience favorite. According to amctv.com, “Whether it’s about a long distance relationship or a stranger who walks into the protagonist’s life, anyone can relate to romance.”

Sleepless in Seattle is a modern classic romance and a perfect example of a long distance romance between two people who fall in love with one another. Though they haven’t met, they relate to each other’s struggles. A Walk to Remember portrays a different type of relationship, where the protagonists are totally different from one another yet they fall in love.

Romantic movies have been favored for a very long time. According to imbd.com, one of the top movie websites, romantic movies are exciting because of what the protagonist(s) goes through in the process of trying to get through struggles in life. Whether their love interest(s) gets in the way or disappears for a while, they keep you interested in the story. The website adds, “In the celluloid world of romantic comedies, shy but decent men get the girl, arguments set up sweet reconciliations, and couples separated by tragedy are always reunited through improbable coincidence.”

Romantic comedies normally don’t exactly mirror similar relationships in real life. Maybe that’s why most women love a good romantic movie. Romantic movies are easy to get lost in, because they often portray men who don’t give up too easily on the girl they are with. In the end, romantic movies may make us cry, smile, and sit there with our hopes high for the girl or boy trying to pursue the person of his or her dreams. Romantic movies have always been favored for that reason.

Top five Halloween horror movies

            Do you go to the movies a lot? Do you have a favorite genre? Scary movies have been around forever, scaring, thrilling, and chilling. Even though we know the scare that may occur in the story, we still jump from it. Jake Cole, a writer for Film.com, says, "Deafening noises, bursts of music, faces materializing from nowhere can make the heart skip, send popcorn flying from tubs and reduce one to watching a screen through woven fingers, but after going home and surviving the night, all the just-a-cat moments and demon faces and gore slip from the mind." Here are a few movies that may do just that:

1. Halloween - A psychotic murderer, institutionalized since childhood for the murder of his sister, escapes and stalks a bookish teenage girl and her friends while his doctor chases him through the streets.
2. Insidious - The terrifying story of a family who, shortly after moving, discovers that dark spirits have possessed their home and that their son has inexplicably fallen into a coma. Trying to escape the haunting and save their son, they move again only to discover that it was not their house that was haunted. It was their son.
3. The Shining - A man, his son, and wife become the winter caretakers of an isolated hotel where Danny (the son) sees disturbing visions of the hotel's past using a telepathic gift known as "The Shining." The father, Jack Torrance, is underway in a writing project when he slowly slips into insanity as a result of cabin fever and the hotel's ghosts. After being convinced by a waiter's ghost to "correct" the family, Jack goes completely insane.
4. Pyscho - A Phoenix secretary steals $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.
5. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - Five friends visiting their grandpa's old house are hunted down and terrorized by a chainsaw wielding killer and his family of grave-robbing cannibals.

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s a great time to be scared. Sometimes we all want to feel a little uncomfortable; research has shown that we all are curious and love mystery, though when we get to into the action and the killer shows up, we fear for the person being pursued. Horror movies can either be scary, creepy, or just stupid, but most of us enjoy them, regardless.
